Pregnancy after Vasectomy

“Pregnancy after Vasectomy”, Is it Possible?

Nowadays, Pregnancy after vasectomy is possible with the help of leading medical development and techniques. You can get your wife or partner pregnant even after years of vasectomy. ICSI, an IVF procedure, is providing positive results of pregnancy for an infertile man.

What is Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is the commonly used method of contraception which is carried out by tying of the vas deference and blocking the passage so that the sperm is not ejaculated outside the men’s body.

What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an IVF technique where a single sperm is injected into a mature egg of a woman during ovulation to form an embryo. The sperm from an infertile man with vasectomy can be extracted with the help of PESA and TESA method.

Techniques for sperm collection

  • Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a simple technique that is used to extract sperm which is later utilized for ICSI. It can be conducted when there is obstruction of vas deference either due to vasectomy or other obstructions. Local anesthesia is given to the patient and then small needle is inserted through skin of scrotum to collect sperm from epididymis where sperm are usually stored after production in testes. It is very simple, quick and can be repeated for 2, 3 times each.
  • Testicular Epididymal Sperm Aspiration or Extraction (TESA/TESE) is conducted when sperm is not found in the epidydimis or there is obstructive azoospermia (vasectomy). In these cases, needle is inserted directly in the testicles and sperm is obtained through the biopsy of the testicle. TESA is appropriate for male with very poor sperm count or suffer from the inability to reach ejaculation. It is a very simple and is non surgical process.

Both PESA and TESA are helpful for collecting sperm to obtain better and successful IVF results from ICSI procedure for their partner’s pregnancy. The sperm collected is then transferred into the already matured egg of a woman during her ovulation to fertilize it and form an embryo. Success rates for pregnancy are higher through these procedures even after vasectomy.
